Learn it Line up the places and subtract ones, then tens, then hundreds. If the top digit is too small, regroup (borrow) from the next place.

Example: $524 - 167$

  1. Ones: 4 − 7 can't be done. Regroup 1 ten: 14 − 7 = 7.
  2. Tens: now 1 − 6 can't be done. Regroup 1 hundred: 11 − 6 = 5.
  3. Hundreds: now 4 − 1 = 3.
  4. Answer: 357. Check: $357 + 167 = 524$.
