Questions at easy, medium and hard levels. Pick a level and get a fresh set every time, with instant feedback.

Learn it Add or subtract the whole numbers and the fractions separately. If the fractions make more than 1, carry a whole. If the top fraction is too small to subtract, regroup 1 whole.

Example: $5\frac{1}{4} - 2\frac{3}{4}$

  1. $\frac{1}{4}$ is less than $\frac{3}{4}$, so regroup: $5\frac{1}{4} = 4\frac{5}{4}$.
  2. Wholes: $4 - 2 = 2$. Fractions: $\frac{5}{4} - \frac{3}{4} = \frac{2}{4} = \frac{1}{2}$.
  3. Answer: $2\frac{1}{2}$.
