Learn it To add or subtract fractions with different denominators, first rewrite them with a common denominator (use the LCM). Then add or subtract the numerators.

Example: $\frac{2}{3} + \frac{1}{4}$

  1. The LCM of 3 and 4 is 12.
  2. $\frac{2}{3} = \frac{8}{12}$ and $\frac{1}{4} = \frac{3}{12}$.
  3. $\frac{8}{12} + \frac{3}{12} = \frac{11}{12}$.
