Learn it Everyone ages by the same number of years, so the difference between two ages never changes. Use sum and difference to find two ages.

Example: Two sisters' ages add to 20 and differ by 4. How old are they?

  1. Remove the difference: $20 - 4 = 16$.
  2. Split equally: $16 \div 2 = 8$ (the younger).
  3. The older is $8 + 4 = 12$. Check: $8 + 12 = 20$ ✓.
