Learn it A mixed number has a whole part and a fraction. To make an improper fraction: whole × denominator + numerator, over the denominator.
Example: Write $3\frac{2}{5}$ as an improper fraction, and $\frac{23}{4}$ as a mixed number.
- $3 \times 5 + 2 = 17$, so $3\frac{2}{5} = \frac{17}{5}$.
- $23 \div 4 = 5\text{ R}3$, so $\frac{23}{4} = 5\frac{3}{4}$.
