Learn it To find a missing number, work backwards: undo the last operation first, using the opposite operation each time.

Example: $4 \times (\square + 3)^2 = 196$

  1. Undo × 4: $196 \div 4 = 49$, so $(\square + 3)^2 = 49$.
  2. Undo the square: $\sqrt{49} = 7$, so $\square + 3 = 7$.
  3. Undo + 3: $\square = 4$. Check: $4 \times 7^2 = 196$ ✓.
