Questions at easy, medium and hard levels. Pick a level and get a fresh set every time, with instant feedback.

Learn it Use a common denominator. If the first fraction is smaller than the second, regroup: take 1 from the whole number and add it to the fraction.

Example: $5\frac{1}{3} - 2\frac{3}{4}$

  1. Common denominator 12: $5\frac{4}{12} - 2\frac{9}{12}$.
  2. $\frac{4}{12} < \frac{9}{12}$, so regroup: $5\frac{4}{12} = 4\frac{16}{12}$.
  3. $4 - 2 = 2$ and $\frac{16}{12} - \frac{9}{12} = \frac{7}{12}$. Answer: $2\frac{7}{12}$.
