Averages in word problems

Learn it Average (mean) = total ÷ number of items, so total = average × number of items. Work with totals when items are added, removed or combined. Average speed = total distance ÷ total time.

Example: 8 players average 15 points. A 9th player scores 33. What is the new average?

  1. Old total: $8 \times 15 = 120$.
  2. New total: $120 + 33 = 153$.
  3. New average: $153 \div 9 = 17$.
