Learn it If y changes by the same amount each time x goes up by 1, the rule is $y = mx + b$: m is that change, and b is the value when x = 0.

Example: x: 1, 2, 3, 4 → y: 2, 5, 8, 11. Find the rule.

  1. y goes up by 3 each time, so m = 3.
  2. When x = 0, y would be $2 - 3 = -1$.
  3. Rule: $y = 3x - 1$.
