Learn it Look for the hidden right angle: walls and floors, east and north, width and height of a screen. The slanted or diagonal length is the hypotenuse.
Example: A 5 m ladder reaches 4.8 m up a wall. How far is its foot from the wall?
- Ladder = hypotenuse = 5, height = 4.8.
- $d^2 = 5^2 - 4.8^2 = 25 - 23.04 = 1.96$.
- $d = \sqrt{1.96} = 1.4$ m.
