Learn it A variable (like x) stands for an unknown number. Turn words into symbols: "more than" → +, "less than" → − (order flips!), "product" → ×, "quotient" → ÷, "twice" → 2 ×.

Example: Write "5 less than three times a number".

  1. Three times a number: $3x$.
  2. 5 less than that: subtract 5 from it.
  3. $3x - 5$ (not $5 - 3x$).
