Learn it Scientific notation writes a number as $a \times 10^n$ with $1 \le a < 10$. Big numbers have positive n; tiny numbers have negative n. To multiply, multiply the a's and add the exponents.

Example: $(4 \times 10^6) \times (3 \times 10^5)$

  1. Multiply: $4 \times 3 = 12$; add exponents: $10^{11}$.
  2. 12 is not less than 10, so write $1.2 \times 10^1$.
  3. Answer: $1.2 \times 10^{12}$.
