Zero and negative exponents

Questions at easy, medium and hard levels. Pick a level and get a fresh set every time, with instant feedback.

Learn it A negative exponent means "one over": $a^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n}$. A fraction to a negative power flips: $\left(\frac{a}{b}\right)^{-n} = \left(\frac{b}{a}\right)^n$.

Example: $\left(\frac{2}{3}\right)^{-2}$ and $\frac{x^{-3}y^2}{x^2y^{-4}}$

  1. Flip: $\left(\frac{3}{2}\right)^2 = \frac{9}{4}$.
  2. Subtract exponents: $x^{-3-2} = x^{-5}$, $y^{2-(-4)} = y^6$.
  3. Positive exponents: $\frac{y^6}{x^5}$.
