Learn it Triangles are similar if their angles match (AA is enough) or their sides are in the same ratio. A line parallel to one side cuts off a smaller similar triangle.
Example: In triangle ABC, DE ∥ BC, AD = 3, DB = 6, DE = 4. Find BC.
- Triangle ADE ~ triangle ABC. AB = 3 + 6 = 9.
- Scale factor = AB ÷ AD = 9 ÷ 3 = 3.
- BC = 4 × 3 = 12.
