Learn it The square root of n is the number that multiplies by itself to give n. The cube root is the number used three times. Cube roots of negative numbers are negative.

Example: $\sqrt{\frac{49}{64}}$ and $\sqrt[3]{-125}$

  1. Root of the top and the bottom: $\frac{\sqrt{49}}{\sqrt{64}} = \frac{7}{8}$.
  2. $(-5) \times (-5) \times (-5) = -125$, so $\sqrt[3]{-125} = -5$.
