Learn it Know the squares to 50 by heart. Shortcuts: a number ending in 5 → multiply the tens digit by the next number and write 25 ($35^2$: $3 \times 4 = 12$ → 1,225). Near 50, use $(50 - d)^2 = 2500 - 100d + d^2$.

Example: $48^2$ and $47^2 - 43^2$

  1. $48^2 = (50 - 2)^2 = 2500 - 200 + 4 = 2304$.
  2. $47^2 - 43^2 = (47 + 43)(47 - 43) = 90 \times 4 = 360$.
