Answer key
- 8 — In 985: 9 hundreds, 8 tens, 5 ones. The tens digit is 8.
- A ($<$) — Compare from the left. The hundreds are the same, so compare the tens: 873 is greater.
- B (Odd) — Look at the ones digit: 1. It is odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9), so 311 is odd.
- 521 — "Gets more" means add: 339 + 182 = 521.
- 558 — Add the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds, regrouping when a column makes 10 or more. 530 + 28 = 558.
- 782 — Subtract the ones, tens and hundreds, regrouping a ten or a hundred when the top digit is too small. 827 − 45 = 782. Check: 782 + 45 = 827.
- 4 — Count by 6s to 24: that takes 4 jumps, so 6 × 4 = 24.
- 45 — 4 × 9 = 36, then 36 + 9 = 45.
- C ($3 \times 7 = 21$) — The array has 3 rows of 7: 3 × 7 = 21.
- 9 — 36 ÷ 4 = 9, so 9 × 4 = 36.
- 7 — Grouping: 14 ÷ 2 = 7 teams.
- 6 — 18 ÷ 3 = 6.
- 9 — 18 ÷ 2 = 9, so 1/2 of 18 is 9.
- B ($>$) — Cutting a whole into more pieces makes each piece smaller. 1/2 is bigger than 1/5.
- B ($\dfrac{3}{9}$) — Cut each part into 3: 1/3 = 3/9. The shaded amount stays the same.
- 37 — Each round: × 2, then + 3. 7 → 17 → 37. It ends with 37.
- 12 — 7 × 6 = 42. Both sides must be equal: 42 − 30 = 12.
- B (False) — 5 × 9 = 45, not 43.
- A ($\$1.30$) — Change = amount paid − cost: $\$5.00$ − $\$3.70$ = $\$1.30$. Count up from $\$3.70$ to check.
- 13 — 4 × $\$5$ = $\$20$. $\$20$ − $\$7$ = $\$13$.
- 5:20 — Add 20 minutes to 5:00: the class ends at 5:20.
- B (8:00) — The short hand points to 8, so the hour is 8. The long hand points to 12, which is 0 minutes. The time is 8:00.
- 2600 — 2 kg = 2,000 g. 2,000 + 600 = 2,600 g.
- 444 — 2 m = 200 cm. 200 + 244 = 444 cm.
- C (greater than) — A right angle is a square corner, like the corner of a page. This angle is wider than a square corner, so it is greater than a right angle.
- 16 — Each square has 4 sides: 4 × 4 = 16.
- D (Fish) — Fish has the tallest bar (10).
- 6 — The mode is the value that appears most often. 6 appears 2 times.
- 10 — 5 × $\$2$ = $\$10$. $\$20$ − $\$10$ = $\$10$.
- 1 — If all 19 were chickens there would be 38 legs. Each cow adds 2 more legs: (40 − 38) ÷ 2 = 1 cows.
