Tip A quick way to do these in your head
Add the wholes, then the fractions: 2 3/4 + 1 5/6 → 3, and 3/4 + 5/6 = 9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12 = 1 7/12, so 4 7/12. Subtracting 3 1/4 − 1 2/3: borrow 1 → 2 5/4 − 1 2/3 = 2 15/12 − 1 8/12 = 1 7/12.
