Learn it log_b(x) = y means bʸ = x: a logarithm is an exponent. log x (no base written) means base 10. So log₂ 8 = 3 because 2³ = 8, and log 1000 = 3 because 10³ = 1000.
Example: Evaluate log₃ 81.
- 3 to what power is 81?
- 3⁴ = 81, so log₃ 81 = 4.
