Learn it P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A and B). Subtract the overlap so it isn't counted twice. If A and B can't happen together (mutually exclusive), the overlap is 0.

Example: Of 30 students, 18 like soccer, 12 like basketball and 7 like both.

  1. Soccer or basketball: 18 + 12 − 7 = 23.
  2. P = 23/30.
