Useful for: AP® Precalculus

Learn it Ellipse x²/a² + y²/b² = 1: it crosses the axes at (±a, 0) and (0, ±b). Hyperbola x²/a² − y²/b² = 1 opens left and right with asymptotes y = ±(b/a)x. Planet orbits are ellipses.

Example: x²/25 + y²/9 = 1: length of the major axis?

  1. a = 5, b = 3.
  2. Major axis = 2a = 10.
