Learn it The roots of ax² + bx + c = 0 are the zeros of the function and the x-intercepts of its graph. The discriminant b² − 4ac tells how many: positive → 2, zero → 1, negative → 0 (the parabola misses the x-axis).

Example: How many x-intercepts does y = 3x² − 2x + 4 have?

  1. D = 4 − 48 = −44 < 0.
  2. None: the parabola doesn't cross the x-axis.
