Learn it Knowing squares and cubes by heart makes roots, Pythagoras and algebra much faster. Two shortcuts: a number ending in 5 squares to (tens × (tens + 1)) followed by 25, so 65² = 6 × 7 = 42 → 4225. And a² − b² = (a − b)(a + b), so 73² − 27² = 46 × 100 = 4600.

Example: Find 45² without a calculator.

  1. The tens digit is 4: 4 × 5 = 20.
  2. Write 25 after it: 45² = 2025.
