Learn it A rational number can be written as a fraction of two integers: every terminating or repeating decimal is rational. An irrational number's decimal never ends and never repeats, like $\sqrt{2}$, $\sqrt{10}$ and $\pi$.

Example: Is $\sqrt{50}$ rational?

  1. 50 is not a perfect square ($7^2 = 49$, $8^2 = 64$).
  2. So $\sqrt{50}$ is a never-ending, non-repeating decimal (about 7.07…).
  3. It is irrational, and it lies between 7 and 8.
