Learn it The absolute value |a| is the distance from 0, so it is never negative. Opposites (like 7 and −7) are the same distance from 0.
Example: Evaluate $|-8| - |3| \times (-2)$.
- $|-8| = 8$ and $|3| = 3$.
- Multiply first: $3 \times (-2) = -6$.
- $8 - (-6) = 8 + 6 = $ 14.
