Learn it Like terms have the same variable part (3x and −5x). Expand brackets first, then add the coefficients of like terms.

Example: Simplify $3(2x - 5) - 4(x - 7)$.

  1. Expand: $6x - 15 - 4x + 28$. (−4 × −7 = +28)
  2. Collect x-terms: $6x - 4x = 2x$.
  3. Collect numbers: $-15 + 28 = 13$. Answer: $2x + 13$.
