Learn it Profit or loss percent is always calculated on the cost price (CP). Selling price (SP) = CP × (1 + profit%) or CP × (1 − loss%).

Example: An item costs $\$250$ and is sold at a 12% profit. Find SP.

  1. SP = 112% of CP.
  2. $250 \times 1.12 = 280$.
  3. SP = $280. (Working back: CP = SP ÷ 1.12.)
