Learn it A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction a/b of integers, including negative fractions and decimals. Use the same rules as integers for the sign: same signs multiply or divide to a positive, different signs to a negative. To add or subtract fractions, use a common denominator. Order of operations still applies.
Example: Evaluate −2/3 + 5/6 ÷ (−1/2).
- Divide first: 5/6 ÷ (−1/2) = 5/6 × (−2) = −5/3.
- Then add: −2/3 + (−5/3) = −7/3.
