Learn it Expand brackets, then collect the x-terms on one side and the numbers on the other. With fractions, cross-multiply or multiply by the common denominator.

Example: $3(x + 2) = x + 14$

  1. Expand: $3x + 6 = x + 14$.
  2. Subtract x and 6 from both sides: $2x = 8$.
  3. $x = 4$. Check: $3(6) = 18$ and $4 + 14 = 18$ ✓
