Learn it The median splits ordered data in half. Q1 is the median of the lower half and Q3 the median of the upper half. IQR = Q3 − Q1. A box plot shows the minimum, Q1, median, Q3 and maximum.
Example: Data: 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15.
- Median = 8 (the middle value).
- Lower half 3, 5, 7: Q1 = 5. Upper half 10, 12, 15: Q3 = 12.
- IQR = 12 − 5 = 7.
