Learn it In a linear relation, y changes by the same amount each time x goes up by 1. That is the rate of change (slope). The initial value is y when x = 0.

Example: x: 0, 1, 2, 3 and y: 5, 8, 11, 14.

  1. y goes up by 3 each step: rate of change 3.
  2. When x = 0, y = 5: initial value 5.
  3. $y = 3x + 5$.
