Learn it In a right triangle, label the sides from angle θ: opposite, adjacent and hypotenuse (the longest side). SOH: sin = opp/hyp. CAH: cos = adj/hyp. TOA: tan = opp/adj.

Example: Opposite 5, adjacent 12, hypotenuse 13.

  1. $\sin\theta = \frac{5}{13}$ (SOH).
  2. $\cos\theta = \frac{12}{13}$ (CAH).
  3. $\tan\theta = \frac{5}{12}$ (TOA).
