Answer key

  1. C ($(x + 6)(y + 7)$) — Group in pairs: xy + 7x = x(y + 7), and 6y + 42 = 6(y + 7). The common bracket gives (x + 6)(y + 7).
  2. A ($(3x + 5)(x + 8)$) — Look for two numbers that multiply to 120 and add to 29: 24 and 5. Split the middle term and group. The dimensions are 3x + 5 m and x + 8 m.
  3. B ($(3x + 2)(x + 1)$) — Look for two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to 5: 3 and 2. Split the middle term and group. The dimensions are 3x + 2 m and x + 1 m.
  4. C ($x + 3$) — Top factors as (x + 1)(x + 3). Cancel (x + 1): x + 3.
  5. 24 — R(x) = (17 + x)(775 − 25x) has zeros at x = −17 and x = 31. The vertex is halfway: x = 7. Best price: 17 + 7 = $24.
  6. C (None) — D = 9 − 24 = -15. D < 0: no real roots.
  7. C (vertical stretch by 3, 4 left, 7 down) — a = 3; (x + 4) moves it 4 left; −7 moves it 7 down.
  8. 2 — y = a(x + 3)² + 4. Substitute (−5, 12): 12 = a(4) + 4, so 4a = 8 and a = 2.
  9. 70 — Multiply the first by 10: 5x + 4y = 1730. Use x = 360 − y: 5(360 − y) + 4y = 1730 → -y = -70 → y = 70.
  10. A (One) — Rewrite the second: y = 5x - 4. Different slopes: the lines cross once.
  11. -1 — Isolate y: y = -4x + 2. Substitute: −x + 4(−4x + 2) = 25 → −17x = 17 → x = −1. Then y = 6.
  12. 3 — Multiply to match a coefficient (e.g. first × 4, second × 3), then subtract to eliminate a variable. The solution is (3, −3).
  13. B (No) — Slope AB = 2/-1, slope BC = -1/-1. Their product is not −1, so AB and BC are not perpendicular.
  14. (0.5, −1.5) — The centre is the midpoint of any diameter: ((3 − 2) ÷ 2, (−1 − 2) ÷ 2) = (0.5, −1.5).
  15. 1.0 — Distance = |3(2) + 4(−1) + 3| ÷ √(9 + 16) = 5 ÷ 5 ≈ 1.
  16. B ($y = -4x + 9$) — Midpoint (2, 1). Slope of AB = 1/4, so the bisector's slope is -4. y − 1 = -4(x − 2) → y = -4x + 9.
  17. 91.1 — Area = ½ × 23 × 8 × sin 82° ≈ 91.1.
  18. 6.8 — Same sun angle, so similar triangles: 1.5/2 = h/9. h = 9 × 1.5 ÷ 2 ≈ 6.8 m.
  19. 65.4 — tan 51° = h/53, so h = 53 tan 51° ≈ 65.4 m.
  20. 17.0 — Two sides and the angle between them: cosine law. d² = 6² + 21² − 2(6)(21) cos 42° ≈ 289.73, d ≈ 17.0 km.
  21. (4, −2) — x: 2 + 2 = 4. y: -2 × 2 + 2 = −2.
  22. 17.5 — 24 ÷ 8 = 3 half-lives. 140 × (½)^3 = 17.5 mg.
  23. A ($\log_{10} \dfrac{1}{100} = -2$) — bʸ = x becomes log_b x = y: the base stays the base and the exponent is the answer.
  24. 14.3 — 4,000(1.08)ᵗ = 12,000 → 1.08ᵗ = 3. t = log 3 ÷ log 1.08 ≈ 14.3 years.
  25. 3148 — Cylinder: π(3)²(110) ≈ 3110.2. Cone: ⅓π(3)²(4) ≈ 37.7. Total ≈ 3148 mm³.
  26. C (Not enough information) — Three equal angles (AAA) only shows the triangles are similar: they could be different sizes.
  27. 15.7 — θ = 60° = 1.05 rad. s = rθ = 15 × 1.05 ≈ 15.7 cm.
  28. 18/35 — P(A or B) = (12 + 13 − 7) ÷ 35 = 18/35.
  29. 5.2 — Mean = 11.71. Variance = average squared distance ≈ 27.06. σ = √27.06 ≈ 5.2.
  30. A (Both rise in hot, sunny weather; one does not cause the other) — A third factor (hot, sunny weather) increases both. Correlation does not prove causation.
